No less than 17 people in the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State were burned to death in a ghastly road accident.

On Saturday night, along the roadway between Akwanga and Gudi community, a fatal accident involving a commercial and private vehicle occurred.

In a notification Sunday, the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC) confirmed that the travelers were blazed beyond recognition.

Ebere Onyegbaduo, FRSC Unit Commander in Akwanga, noted that despite receiving a distress call about the tragic accident, the commission was unable to rescue the situation.

“By 7 pm around “Ahead Town” between Akwanga and Gudi Towns, we obtained a distress call from a ghastly accident.”

“We arrived on scene and discovered a Sharon Bus Commercial VW and a Private Toyota Sienna Bus set ablaze with the passengers inside the vehicles burning.”

He said, “We called for the Fire Brigade, the fire was contained by 11 pm, and by 2am, we completed the rescue.”

However, a preliminary investigation conducted by (FRSC) found that shortly after the vehicle ran into a Toyota Sienna truck, the commercial Sharon bus overtook a hill at a dangerous curve.

Shortly after a head-to-head crash that resulted in the death of 17 travelers beyond recognition, the two cars burst into flames.

FRSC noted that the corpses of the Sharon Bus occupants were preserved at Akwanga General Hospital while those in the private vehicle were taken to Lafia State Capital’s Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital.

Over the years, a large number of accidents have been reported along the Akwanga-Lafiya Highway, resulting in multiple deaths.

Along the expressway, there is a famous hill named ‘many have gone’.

The highway connects the North with the country’s South-East area. Over the years, the federal government refused to extend the risky path to normal.
