18 people dead, 21 others injured as Boko Haram attack civilians in Damasak, Borno

On Tuesday, April 13, Boko Haram terrorists attacked Damasak town in the Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno, killing at least 18 people and injuring another 21.

Governor Babagana Zulum, who made the announcement during a visit to Damasak on Friday, April 16, said strong measures were being placed in place to prevent possible insurgent attacks on the community.

Zulum, who was in town from Thursday to Friday, traveled with Senator Abubakar Kyari of Borno North, a Damasak native, and Bukar Gana Kareto, a member of the House of Representatives representing Mobbar, Guzamala, and Abadam, as well as some officials.

As part of the steps, the governor held an organizational meeting with soldiers and other security forces, after which he presented 12 security vehicles, including an armored personnel carrier ( APC) and 11 patrol vehicles, to support the armed forces and volunteers, including trained youths in the civilian JTF, hunters, and vigilantes, in the fight against insurgents.

Damasak, the headquarters of the Mobbar local government area in northern Borno, is on the outskirts of Lake Chad and shares a border with Niger Republic communities. The town used to be a manufacturer and exporter of vegetables to Nigerian, Niger Republic, and other neighboring countries’ target markets.

In 2014, Boko Haram invaded Damasak as part of their caliphate. The insurgents appear to be interested in the region, presumably for strategic reasons such as access to agricultural funds and land routes to the Niger Republic.

Residents told Governor Zulum that 18 people had died, 21 had been injured, and that many properties had been lost.

Property lost included a UN humanitarian hub, private residential buildings, a police station, the district head’s palace, a primary healthcare center, and a GSM Village.

Residents informed Governor Zulum that the insurgents assaulted the town with three gun trucks. Residents recalled that the Boko Haram/ISWP party had attacked Damasak for the sixth time in two weeks on Tuesday.

The Governor directed that agricultural activities in Damasak be strengthened, and he assessed a rice farm that his administration supports in order to improve food security.
