The 63-year-old agreed to step down from his position as a member of the governing body of world football after a telephone conversation on Thursday.

A few days after stepping down as Chairman of the English Football Association, Greg Clarke resigned from his position as Vice-President of FIFA.

After stirring outrage with a series of “staggering” remarks at a parliamentary meeting, the 63-year-old left his post with the FA.

Clarke referred to “high-profile colored footballers,” said that more South Asians work in the IT department of the FA than Afro-Caribbeans because they have “different career preferences,” referred to as making a “life option” for gay players and said that young women goalkeepers do not like to have balls hit hard on them.

Clarke was criticized by Kick It Out chairman Sanjay Bhandari for his use of what he called “lazy racial stereotypes” and “casual sexism,” saying that the remarks were “staggering” from a man in the role of chairman.

A FA statement announced that, with immediate effect, sports lawyer Peter McCormick OBE would take over the position as interim chairman, with the hunt for a permanent replacement now underway.

FIFA is now seeking to fill a powerful spot within their group.

That’s because Clarke wanted to walk away from another place of high profile.

“Following a phone call this morning between the UEFA President (Aleksander Ceferin) and Greg Clarke, the UEFA statement released on Thursday read:” They agreed with Greg Clarke ‘s suggestion that he should step down from his role as UEFA representative on the FIFA Council with immediate effect.

Clarke was FIFA’s British Vice-President, having been elected by the Congress of European Football Nations to that post.

After severing ties with the FA, he said of his actions: “As a person who loves football and has given our game decades of service, it is true that I put football’s interests first.”

2020 was a difficult year and I have been seriously considering stepping down for some time to make room for a new Chair now that our CEO transition is complete and under Mark Bullingham ‘s excellent executive leadership is formed.

For our game and for those who watch, play, referee and administer it, my unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice. This has crystallized my determination to move on.

I am profoundly saddened that I have insulted the diverse soccer classes that I and others have been working so hard to include.
