Amazon to situate it’s African headquarters in South Africa

Amazon, an American multinational technology company specializing in e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence, has announced the opening of its African headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a real estate investment of over $279 million (R4 billion).

The 15-hectare plot of land is part of new development in River Club, a sought-after area of Cape Town, and it is divided into two precincts. The first 60,000 square meters will house various layers of growth, while the second 70,000 square meters will house Amazon’s African headquarters.

According to Business Tech, the move would result in the creation of over 5,000 direct construction jobs and 19,000 indirect jobs.

Officials from the city of Cape Town said in a statement:

“Amazon, the world’s largest retailer, will be the anchor tenant, establishing a presence on the African continent.”

“The plan will be carried out in stages, with construction expected to take three to five years.”

For years, Amazon’s web tech behemoth AWS has been based in South Africa, but its key e-commerce platforms have been unavailable on the continent.
