Anne Hathaway apologizes to the disability community for her role in ‘The Witches’ after receiving backlash

After her new film, The Witches, Anne Hathaway apologized, sparking a backlash from the disability community.

After learning “that many people with limb differences, particularly children, are in pain” over her portrayal of the Grand High Witch, the actress issued a long apology on Instagram.

Let me start by saying that I do my best not out of some scrambling PC fear to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency we should all strive for, “Hathaway wrote on Thursday, November 5.”

She continued, “As someone who truly believes in inclusiveness and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain it caused.” “And I’m sorry. When the look of the character was brought to me, I did not connect the limb difference with the GHW; if I had, I assure you this would never have happened.’

In the film, with three fingers on each hand, the character of Hathaway is shown, a condition that is similar in appearance to ectrodactyly, or “split hand.” It is usually recognized on the hand or foot by missing central digits.

The actress continued: “I particularly want to say I ‘m sorry for children with differences in limbs: I promise I’ll do better now that I know better.” And to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own children, I owe a special apology: I’m sorry to let your family down.’
