During the Blaugrana Liga clash with Real Betis, the highly-rated teenager was forced off and will now sit out the vast majority of 2020-21.
Ansu Fati, after having knee surgery, faces about four months on the sidelines in Barcelona.
On Monday, the highly ranked 18-year-old went underneath the knife. The operation was performed by renowned expert Dr Ramon Cugat, with everything going to plan on the medical side.
Fati will have to sit out the vast majority of the 2020-21 season on the sporting front, with the club announcing that he will spend about four months on the sidelines but it may be longer.
Their statement read: “Ansu Fati, the first team player, underwent a successful operation on Monday for Dr Ramon Cugat’s injury to the inner meniscus of the left knee and under the supervision of the medical services of the club. The expected recovery period will be four months.”
It should be recalled that the first half of Barca v Betis was played by Ansu, in which he was very involved. This season, 10 matches have been played by the young Barca forward, seven in the League and three in the Champions League. This season, Ansu played 596 minutes in total, in which he was able to score five goals and distribute two assists.
In the Clasico loss against Real Madrid, one of Fati ‘s five goals was one that saw him become the youngest scorer this century in the prestigious fixture, while also making a senior international breakthrough with Spain.
However, with Fati forced out of Barcelona’s latest La Liga outing against Real Betis, remarkable development has been brought to an abrupt halt.
At half-time in that game, he was retired and replaced by Lionel Messi, who went on to score twice in a 5-2 Blaugrana victory.
Afterward, Ronald Koeman told reporters: “In the first half, Fati had some pain and we substituted him at half-time so as not to take chances.”
He can now embark on a long road to recovery with Fati having his knee healed.
In the future of Barcelona, there is a major role for him to play, especially in the confusion surrounding six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, with the Catalan giants linking a hot prospect to a new contract until the summer of 2024.
