As they lost points for a sixth consecutive Premier League match, Arsenal did little to ease the pressure on Mikel Arteta and had a player sent off again on Wednesday in a 1-1 home draw with Southampton.

The men of Arteta managed at least to escape a record fifth home league loss in a row, but they were undermined by indiscipline as they had begun to display promising signs and must eventually count themselves fortunate to hang on to a point, as has become something of a habit.

Initially, Arsenal struggled to get to grips with Southampton and in the latter stages of the first phase only really began to deliver a challenge of their own at that point, former Gunner Theo Walcott had already provided a justified lead to the visitors.

The urgency of Southampton fell and Arsenal restored parity early in the second half through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the Gabon striker breaking an 11-match league run without an open-play goal.

But when Gabriel Magalhaes was given Arsenal’s seventh red card – four more than any other Premier League player – since Arteta’s first game in charge, their hopes of returning to winning ways in the league were dashed.

While the Arsenal goal was not exactly peppered by Saints, they showed much greater cohesion and it came as little surprise to see them carve open the hosts in the 18th minute, Walcott latching on to the through-ball of Che Adams and clipping a sumptuous finish over the advancing Bernd Leno.

In the latter stages of the first half, Arsenal improved mildly, but Alex McCarthy refused Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe, who were returned to the starting XI after suspension.

After the break, the progress persisted and the equaliser arrived after 52 minutes.

Until offloading to Eddie Nketiah on the edge of the box, Saka impressively evaded three Saints defenders, and his flick allowed Aubameyang to slot in his first open-play goal since the first match of the season.

But in rapid succession, Gabriel was shown two yellow cards, the second for tugging back Walcott on the break, as the mission of Arsenal suddenly became trickier.

As he knocked Oriol Romeu’s pass on to the crossbar 20 minutes from time, Nathan Redmond almost saw Saints take full advantage, before Rob Keeping was also denied in stoppage time by the woodwork.
