After defender Gabriel Magalhaes was sent off in their game against Southampton, Arsenal supporters defended manager Mikel Arteta.

In the first half, the Saints went up 1-0, with former gunner Theo Walcott giving the lead to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

After some outstanding work from Bukayo Saka, Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brought them level in the second half with his first Premier League goal in six games.

Arsenal were looking to create some momentum after Aubameyang’s equalizer and get a much-needed win before Gabriel dashed their hopes by getting booked twice in the space of just four minutes.

After going through the back of Saints striker Che Adams, he got his first yellow and then hauled down Walcott after the forward got the better of him.

Referee Stuart Atwell had no choice but to show a second yellow to Gabriel and send him off, dashing the hopes of Arsenal of winning with the Gunners forced to try and hold on for the draw.

It was the seventh time since Arteta took over a player was sent off in the league, four more than any other club in the same era, but some fans believed that you cannot blame Arteta”

One fan wrote on social media: “You cannot blame Arteta for David Luiz being a fool multiple times, Pepe being aggro, and Xhaka being aggro. This red card by Garbiel was foolish. Arteta cannot magic our players into not doing stupid s**t.”

Speaking on commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live, former Reading, Chelsea and Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell said about the red card: “Gabriel doesn’t need to get too close there.

“Apply pressure, but take the length of the arm down. There’s no need for you to get right behind Theo Walcott. He still tries to turn on a six-pence, so sit at the length of his bat, and see if you can see the ball from behind.

“And if he goes either way, then you have got half a yard to try and get it. He’s gone too high, knows he is in trouble and now Arsenal are up against it.”
