Until around the end of the season, Arsenal have recruited Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan on loan.

The Gunners were hoping to take in an experienced stopper to provide competition for proven No. 1 Bernd Leno, who struggled to impress with the summer signing of Runar Runarsson.

They also brought in Australian international Ryan, who after being dropped by manager Graham Potter had fallen down the pecking order at Brighton.

Ryan was excited to join Arsenal with a series of images on his Twitter page in his new kit, which showed he was going to wear No.33 for the Gunners.

He wrote: “Signing for the club you grew up loving as a kid. Buzzing to be starting this new chapter and will give everything I’ve got to add to the first club I ever loved.”

After being recruited by Chris Hughton despite promotion to the Premier League in 2017, the 28-year-old was the Seagulls No.1, making 121 contributions in the competition, but he has lost his place to Robert Sanchez in the starting XI, and will now instead provide back-up at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told the Gunners’ official website: “Through his accomplishments with Brighton in recent seasons, we know Mat very well and he brings our squad additional quality.”

“Mat has very great experience in the Premier League and has played in the league over 100 times, which is something that will benefit enormously us on and off the pitch. We welcome Mat to Arsenal and look forward to this season working with him.”

Brighton manager Potter told the club site of his club, “Mat was a great servant to the Premier League club, and at this level, he played no small part for the club.”

For only one place, we have tremendous talent and competitiveness at this club, and understandably, as Australia’s No 1, Mat wants the opportunity for more frequent opportunities.

“Mat is a joy to work with, a professional consummate and someone who works extremely hard at his game. At Arsenal, we wish him well and will watch his progress there.

Between 2009 and 2013, Ryan played in Australia for Blacktown City and Central Coast Mariners, before heading to Europe, where he made more than 100 appearances for Club Brugge. He joined Valencia in 2015, where he spent two seasons with Genk, including a loan spell.
