ASUU clears air on strike suspension

The Academic Workers Union of Universities (ASUU) says the on-going industrial action has not been suspended.

In an interview with NAN on Friday, the Chairman of ASUU University of Jos, Dr Lazarus Maigoro, revealed this.

Maigoro clarified that in some quarters the union has not signed any agreements with the Federal Government of Nigeria to call off the strike as peddled.

He said the Federal Government had promised to comply with parts of the agreement that led to the ongoing strike, but had not yet done so.

Maigoro said It must be stated here categorically that ASUU never signed any agreement to suspend the strike but agreed on timelines for the government to implement certain aspects of the issues in dispute.”

One of the issues agreed, for example, was that all the withheld wages and check-off dues of ASUU members for six to nine months will be released by December 9, but the date has passed and nothing has been done.

Among other issues, the N40 billion in academic allowances earned and N30 billion in revitalization funding will also be released by December 11, but none has been met so far.

“The next thing we heard was that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, told the public that ASUU had agreed to suspend the strike.”

The Minister rubbished Maigoro’s claims that the government had fulfilled its part of the agreement reached to allow the union to cancel the industrial action.
