After Thomas Muller earned an 86th-minute penalty to give a weakened Bayern Munich a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid’s hopes of advancing from their Champions League group will go down to the final matchday.

Bayern had won their previous 15 UEFA flagship competition matches, but they were already assured of top spot in Group A and left out of their traveling squad the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer.

With Lokomotiv Moscow losing 3-1 at home to Salzburg earlier on Tuesday, Atleti’s win will guarantee a second place with a game to spare, an objective they were on course to achieve thanks to Joao Felix’s eighth goal this season in 14 appearances.

After 26 minutes, the Portugal international converted from a Marcos Llorente cutback, but Felipe – brought on for the wounded Jose Gimenez – dropped Muller in the box and converted his fellow replacement from 12 yards.

Atleti must now avoid the Salzburg loss to reach Bayern next week, unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions following Muller’s late goal in the last 16.

Alexander Nubel was checked by Angel Correa, making his first appearance in the Bayern tournament, and Yannick Carrasco fired wide in a bright start to Atletico’s match.

Soon after as Llorente played a one-two on the right, the hosts made the breakthrough, took the ball to the byline and picked Joao Felix out to finish from six yards.

After a mazy sprint, Jamal Musiala fired just short, but Atleti still looked more threatening, with Joao Felix denied from a good place by Nubel and Llorente blazing over.

For the first time, Jan Oblak was called into action to regularly save from the long-range effort of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting just shy of the hour mark as Atleti, with five clean sheets in six previous home matches, kept firm at the back.

But after Hansi Flick introduced Kingsley Coman and Muller, Bayern’s pressure ultimately said, the latter being brought down in the box by Felipe’s outstretched leg for a late penalty that he guided past Oblak’s desperate dive.
