Despite winning just one league title, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was appointed Coach of the Decade.

The Argentinean saw off competition from Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho to be named the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) Coach of the Decade, which announced the 20 best club football head coaches.

Pep Guardiola (144 points) was pipped for the award by Simeone (152 points), with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp third on 105 points.

The IFFHS noted in a statement: ‘In this decade, Simeone accomplished great success with his Atletico Madrid club: 1 LaLiga title, 1 Copa del Rey, 1 Super Copa Espana, 2 UEFA Europa League titles, 2 UEFA Super Cup titles and 2 UEFA Champions League Finals runner-ups.

His consistency and his influence made the difference in winning the 2011-2020 Decade Award.’

Atletico currently have a four-point lead at the top, with 41 points out of 16 games played, and have lost this campaign just once so far. Real Madrid, with two games in hand, sits in second on 37 points.
