Bahrain said the emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech had been authorized.

As announced by the Bahraini national news agency BNA, the approval on Friday makes Bahrain the second country in the world to issue an emergency use permit for the vaccine.

“The Bahrain National Health Regulatory Authority of Bahrain has approved the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to be used in high-risk groups.”

Bahrain did not say how many vaccines it had ordered, nor when it would begin vaccinations.

The circumstances in which the vaccine must be maintained will be an immediate obstacle for Bahrain.

Bahrain is a nation in the Middle East that regularly sees temperatures of about 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity in the summer.

There is a state-owned carrier for Bahrain, Gulf Air, which it will use to transport the vaccines.

The Dubai-based long-haul carrier Emirates has already said in the nearby United Arab Emirates that it is preparing its facilities to deliver vaccines at ultra-cold temperatures.

Bahrain has already issued an emergency-use permit for a Sinopharm Chinese vaccine and inoculated some 6,000 people with it.

“The approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will add another important layer to the national response of the Kingdom to COVID-19,” Mariam al-Jalahma, NHRA chief executive, told BNA.
