Barcelona was forced to postpone its presidential election, scheduled to take place on 24 January.

Plans at Camp Nou need to be updated in the face of continuing public health issues during the coronavirus pandemic.

For the eagerly awaited vote, no new date has been set, but the Catalan government has been called upon to pave the way for the election to take place.

The last three candidates left in the running to take charge of the Liga giants are Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa, with former president Laporta a clear favorite to return to office.

“In a post on the club’s official website, Barca revealed: “This Friday, 15 January, the Catalan Government and FC Barcelona held a virtual negotiating meeting to discuss the holding of elections for the sports entity’s President and Board of Directors in the light of the pandemic of Covid-19.

“In the course of the meeting, the Government has communicated to the club that the present epidemiological situation does not make it possible to authorise the movement outside the municipality to members who do not have a polling station in their municipality on January 24, given the high mobility this would entail.

“In this regard, the Club asked the Government of Catalonia to evaluate the possibility of amending the current sports legislation in order to allow the new election date to be voted by post, a request which the Government has undertaken to study.”

With the future of Lionel Messi, who continues to run down his term, Barca is eager to get a successor to the ousted Josep Maria Bartomeu in place, one of several issues that the new president will need to resolve.

Completing a contract for defender Eric Garcia of Manchester City is also on the to-do list, with the 20-year-old knowing that terms on a move that will take him back to his roots have been decided.
