After snatching a dramatic victory over previous leaders Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich will end a glorious 2020 at the top of the Bundesliga.

The last-gasp strike of Robert Lewandowski sent Bayern Munich top of the table as this season’s unbeaten Bundesliga record of Bayer Leverkusen ended dramatically with a 2-1 loss.

On Saturday at BayArena, a spectacular Patrik Schick volley put Leverkusen in front but the European and Bundesliga champions came from behind to extend their unbeaten streak to 19 matches and replace the summit hosts.

This week, Lewandowski celebrated being crowned Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2020 by taking advantage of a mix-up to go home late in the first half between Jonathan Tah and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

In just about the last kick of the game, the Polish striker secured it, Tah punished for another mistake as Bayern went two points clear in their last game of the year.

Schick beautifully volleying Nadiem Amiri’s enticing cross beyond a motionless Manuel Neuer, Leverkusen caught Bayern napping with a short corner to take the lead 14 minutes in.

After Schick had a goal ruled out for offside, Leroy Sane came on for the injured Coman, and Bayern were gifted an equalizer two minutes before the break, an unmarked Lewandowski going into the empty net when Tah and goalkeeper Hradecky made a mess of trying to deal with the cross of Thomas Muller.

As Hansi Flick’s side ended the first half strongly, Lewandowski planted another free header over the crossbar and the striker should have tried his luck instead of attempting a pass after turning sharply early in the second half in the penalty area.

With a rasping drive, Amiri stung Neuer’s palms and Hradecky tipped Serge Gnabry’s shot around the post superbly as both sides pressed for a second goal in a gripping encounter.

In a double change that saw replacement Sane dropped, Joshua Kimmich made his return from injury from the bench, the winger appearing understandably unimpressed to be hauled off halfway through the second half.

Until a dramatic final twist, Jamal Musiala struck an upright from the edge of the area with a calculated right-foot shot, Kimmich pouncing on Tah’s heavy touch and feeding Lewandowski, who drilled home with the help of a deflection.
