A surfeit of suitors waiting in the wings is likely to occur if the Austrian International does not reach terms with the German giants.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, president of Bayern Munich, maintains that the European champions want David Alaba to remain at the club past the end of his current contract, which is expected to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season.

For some time, the future of Alaba in Bavaria has been up in the air, with talks at a standstill as both the player and the club attempt to thrash out the best possible agreement for everyone involved.

As reported by sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, Bayern’s most recent bid came with a deadline, but the contract was not accepted and the club official confirmed his belief that the Austrian international will move on at the end of the current campaign.

In the meantime, Rummenigge maintains that the talks remain cordial and is hopeful that the defender will stay for the near future at the Allianz Arena.

“I don’t know [if Alaba will leave],” Sport Bild told the 65-year-old. We had a meeting two weeks ago with George, his father, and Pini Zahavi, his advisor. The talk was all right, the environment was perfect.

But I have to admit, for months, we have been moving in circles. We have to begin preparing for the new season at some stage. We’ve got to know: is David going to stay with FC Bayern or not? A decision at this stage is important to us.

Reports say that a five-year contract of EUR 11 million per season was offered to the 28-year-old, plus bonuses, and Rummenigge called for players to consider the economic effect of the Covid-19 pandemic during wage negotiations.

“With the coronavirus, players have to gain an understanding of the clubs, particularly right now,” he said. We’ve lost a lot of money and for eight months we haven’t seen a spectator in the stadium. In the three-digit million range, we live with the possibility of losses.

I think players would be well advised to stay at a club if they feel relaxed there and enjoy great achievements, as in the case of David. I think here at the club, we all think the same thing: We all want David to stay. He’s an amazing person and a top player.

“David Alaba has a choice to make for himself now.”
