Boris Johnson plans to close pubs and restaurants in three major northern UK cities as parts of the country face tougher coronavirus lockdown measures.

The Prime Minister is expected to call last orders in Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle, which will be implemented from Monday.

Huge parts of the North of England are already experiencing strict lockdown measures, but it is believed local lockdown measures are not working.

Mr Johnson is facing open rebellion in his own party against his plans for stricter measures on 10 million people in the North East and North West.

Conservative MPs are threatening to work with Labour to defeat the government next week in a crunch House of Commons vote on the controversial 10pm pub curfew.

But the Prime Minister is vowing to stick to his guns and is set to clampdown further. In a bid to halt the rising Covid-19 infection rate in the worst affected areas, hospitality will shut but schools, offices and shops will remain open.

Ministers are said to be still torn on what to do about hairdressers, gyms and leisure centre.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester said he has not been consulted on the government’s plans for the area, tweeting: “No discussion. No consultation. Millions of lives affected by Whitehall diktat. It is proving impossible to deal with this Government.”

It follows Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement that she will be banning alcohol in pubs and restaurants in coronavirus hotspot areas north of the border.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced the government will bail out businesses and workers blighted by the stricter measures, but critics have branded the plan “economic suicide”.

Tories have pleaded with Mr Johnson not to copy Scotland and close the pubs.

Close ally Jack Berry said: “If people can’t get a drink to get through this crisis, then what can they do? It would be an act of economic suicide for England to follow this path.”

Hospitality industry bosses are already critical about what impact if any the current 10pm curfew is having on the handling of the crisis.

Another 14,162 Brits were diagnosed with the virus on Wednesday, almost double the figure of 7,108 a week ago.

Mr Johnson is expected to unveil his three tier local lockdown system next week, nicknamed the ‘Rule of Three’.

Reports suggest areas in tier one will see current social distancing measures and the current Rule of Six enforced, areas in tier two will be hit with a ban on households mixing and areas in tier three will face a hospitality lockdown.

Huge parts of the North West and North East of England will automatically qualify for tier three.
