As Borussia Monchengladbach amazingly came from two goals down to beat Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich 3-2 on Friday, Jonas Hofmann played a key role.

After an unexplained handball from Florian Neuhaus, Robert Lewandowski netted his 20th top-flight goal of the season from the penalty spot, and Leon Goretzka had Bayern rolling in the 26th minute at Borussia-Park.

Hofmann, however, struck twice in the space of 10 minutes to send the teams to half-time level, and Neuhaus atoned for what proved to be the winner in the 49th minute for his previous mistake.

Subsequently, Gladbach became the first team to beat Bayern in the Bundesliga since Cologne in February 2011, after dropping 2-0 down.

Following a bizarre handball by Neuhaus, Lewandowski positioned Bayern in front of the penalty spot, though referee Harm Osmers only pointed to the spot after a VAR check.

Six minutes later, Bayern doubled their lead, Goretzka intercepting Matthias Ginter’s pass and drilling a venomous effort after a one-two with Leroy Sane past Yann Sommer.

When Rami Bensebaini recovered the ball high up the pitch, Gladbach reduced the deficit and a fast passing move ended with Hofmann sliding Lars Stindl’s past Manuel Neuer through-ball.

When Stindl displaced Joshua Kimmich and fed Hofmann for another cool end, the VAR confirming he was onside when the pass was played, the hosts drew level in first-half stoppage time.

Four minutes after the restart, Gladbach completed the reversal, Hofmann intercepting Niklas Sule’s pass and teeing up Neuhaus to curl a wonderful effort into the top-right corner.

In the 91st minute, Marco Rose’s men sat deep and Ginter cleared a header from Sule off the line, opening the door for RB Leipzig to replace Bayern at the Bundesliga summit if they could beat Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in a mouthwatering clash.
