As Andrew Robertson was penalized late to allow Brighton and Hove Albion to salvage a 1-1 Premier League draw at AMEX Stadium, Liverpool was denied victory by VAR.

The ninth Liverpool goal of Diogo Jota looked likely to be enough for the Reds to transfer three points at the top of the table away from Tottenham, but the work of the Reds was undone in stoppage time.

Robertson swung a foot out and clipped Danny Welbeck and while no breach was seen by referee Stuart Attwell, as he reviewed the pitch-side camera, he reversed his mind.

Pascal Gross did not make an error, unlike Neal Maupay, who drilled wide from 12 yards to allow Liverpool off the hook in the first half.

It was the third VAR call of the game against Liverpool, with goals correctly called out for offside by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane as Jurgen Klopp was once again left to rue the technology.

In the 10th minute, Brighton should have been leading, except for Aaron Connolly to slice deep as Liverpool centurion Alisson was one-on-one.

Nine minutes later, Connolly atoned, drawing a sloppy tackle from Neco Williams in the area, only for Maupay to side-foot the right-hand upright with a horrible penalty wide.

Before succumbing to an obvious hamstring injury, Maupay lasted only another three minutes, and Brighton appeared to have been forced to pay when Salah latched onto Roberto Firmino’s pass and lobbied Mathew Ryan, but VAR ruled the goal out for a minor offside.

Substitute Jordan Henderson helped Liverpool wrest control, and after Salah’s deft touch, Jota dispatched the pressure on the hour into the left-hand corner.

When he was substituted by Adam Lallana, who only lasted eight minutes, Connolly was seething, and Salah appeared just as furious after he left.

As Liverpool looked poised to seal the points, Salah’s substitute Mane had a perfect header disallowed, but the Reds’ dreams of a victory were snatched away in the closing moments.

Robertson struck Welbeck, and Brighton was awarded its second spot-kick after VAR Kevin Friend told Attwell to scan the screen, Gross sending a cool finish down the middle to save a goal.

And what is next?

Liverpool has a big Champions League clash with Ajax coming up on Tuesday, while in a south-coast derby on December 7, Brighton will next go up to Southampton.
