In English football, the Manchester United star enjoyed a sensational first 12 months and was awarded the individual distinction for the fourth time.
For December – setting an English record in the process – Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes was named Premier League Player of the Month.
In a single calendar year, Fernandes became the first footballer to be named Player of the Month four times in the English top flight. In February, May and November, he also accepted the prize.
Since joining from Sporting CP 12 months ago, the Portugal international has emerged as a key figure at Old Trafford. His arrival in the United midfield has added class and ingenuity, and this season he has been central to their rise to the top of the Premier League.
His December results included an assist after coming on as a half-time replacement in the 3-1 comeback victory over West Ham, two goals in Leeds’ 6-2 thrashing, and participation in strikes against Leicester and Wolves.
In United, Fernandes was important to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League – a lead they could extend when on Sunday they played opponents, champions, and current second-placed side Liverpool.
It was a full month with three goals and four assists,” Three goals and four assists was a complete month,” It’s perfect to scoring and helping your team-mates. I want to achieve other honors and medals, but I’m very pleased to make history.
Before we can begin dreaming about being winners, it’s a long way. We’ve got to continue working. We’re up against one of England’s best teams and we know what that means to the fans, but the key point is the same: three points.
Fernandes was at the top of an eight-man shortlist which included Marcus Rashford, his Manchester United team-mate. Forward Mohamed Salah from Liverpool and defender John Stones from Manchester City.
Nominations were also made for Aston Villa duo Anwar El Ghazi and Emi Martinez, Burnley defender Ben Mee and West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek.
After Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tottenham forward Son Heung-min picked up the gongs for September and October respectively, Fernandes became the first man this season to win Premier League Player of the Month back-to-back.
