President Buhari assures Niger President of security, and to provide assistance in diverse ways


President Muhammadu Buhari has told Mohamed Bazoum, the newly elected President of the Niger Republic, that his administration will work to resolve the security issues that the two countries are facing.

Bazoum, the President of Nigerien, is currently in Nigeria on his first official foreign visit since being elected.

“We will stabilize our region for the good of the two countries,” Buhari said in a statement released by his spokesman, Femi Adesina.

President Buhari said that Nigerians and Nigeriens share a common culture, language, and way of life, as well as a 1,500-kilometer land boundary, and that they cannot be ignored.

The President congratulated Bazoum on his recent presidential election victory as well as his prosperous inauguration.

“You’ve been a long time in the system. The only problem is that you had never served as President before. “You are now one,” the host President said, promising that Nigeria will assist its near neighbor in a variety of ways as needed.

On Boko Haram-inspired terrorism, President Buhari noted that the Niger Republic also suffers from high casualties, and vowed to do everything possible to protect both countries.

President Buhari expressed gratitude to Mahamadou Issoufou, the immediate past President, for “his understanding and sacrifices” in helping to stabilize the region, and urged the successor to preserve the institutions that his predecessor had founded.

President Bazoum expressed his delight at making Nigeria his first stop, noting that the two countries share mutual interests and that a positive relationship is crucial.

“The fact that some Nigerians flee to Niger during terrorist attacks shows that we need to collaborate, and we will face our challenges together,” he said.
