On Sunday, Donald Trump confronted fresh demands from several members of his own party to resign over the violent invasion into the U.S. Capitol, as the threat is building for a historic second impeachment attempt in the White House in his final 10 days.

“Republican Senator Pat Toomey told CNN, adding, “It would be a very positive outcome,” with the inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden on January 20 fast approaching, and with the country hit by a rising pandemic, a flagging economy, and searing division, resignation “is the best way forward.

Toomey said that Trump had “descended into a level of madness and engaged in the activity that was absolutely unthinkable” after losing the November 3 election.

After the victory, he said Trump’s conduct was ‘wildly different’ from what it was before.

“The first Republican senator to call for resignation was Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, saying, “I want him gone.” House Republicans, like Adam Kinzinger on Sunday, echoed that call.

Authorities continued to search for Trump supporters who on Wednesday aggressively invaded the Capitol after numerous false statements by the president that he had lost to Biden due to fraud.

A seven-foot-tall black metal fence (about two meters) has been erected around the historic house, and in the coming days, extremists have threatened new action both in Washington and in state capitals.
