Since reportedly using a racially derogatory phrase in a social media article, Edinson Cavani may be the target of a Football Association probe.

The striker from Manchester United came off the bench to fire his side on Sunday to a 3-2 victory over Southampton.

When the Uruguay international came off the bench for the second half, the Red Devils were 2-0 down and set Bruno Fernandes up to pull one back before going in two of his own to seal the three points deep in stoppage time.

The 33-year-old shared some of the positive messages he received from fans in the wake of the victory and responded to one post with the message “Gracias n******”.

The post has since been removed by Cavani.

The term used by Cavani is the same Uruguayan co-star that Luis Suarez is alleged to have used during his October 2011 altercation with Patrice Evra, which resulted in a £ 40,000 fine for the former Liverpool star and eight matches being banned.

As of now the FA and United have not commented on the issue.

In a free move in October, Cavani joined the Old Trafford side and netted three goals in five Premier League substitute appearances.

After his influence in Sunday’s match, Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for the striker and was amazed by his movement off the ball.

“Because of his experience and qualities, that movement, he’s one of the best,” Solskjaer said.

He’s one of the best movers you’re going to meet. He will peel off his shoulder, get in front of you, pin you down.

“He wants to be between the two posts that I love. I love a center-forward who gets in there. Sometimes it might hurt, but when you’re there and you get the ball, you’ve gambled and delivered the ball, it’s a goal. Two goals!”

Captain Harry Maguire’s United went as far as to hail him as an inspiration to other strikers.

“He has been without a club for several months so he is coming in and catching up. He is a great professional, he is great to have around place, he is great in the locker room and I think you saw today what he brings to the club,” he added.

“His speed when the ball is wide is to a level that not many strikers can reach. He has always been on the move, always getting across people and that’s why he has always scored goals. So if there are any strikers out here wanting to learn and watch, I am sure they are studying his movement and what he has done in his career.”
