When they look to tie him down to a new deal, Lionel Messi has plenty of criteria for Barcelona.
In the summer of 2021, the Argentinean will see his current contract expire and seek to depart in the summer.
Messi was prepared to break ties with the club at which he spent his entire professional career after a horrific end to the season.
With a big fan, Pep Guardiola, as well as the club’s founders, Manchester City was the most likely destination.
But Barca fought back and told Messi that there was no way for him to go, and he stayed, in the end.
And the 33-year-old was still able to prolong his stay at Nou Camp, with Los Cules searching for a new deal to tie him down.
The requests from Messi, however, go further than the normal salary demands.
The Argentine international has a strong partnership with Ronald Koeman, according to Marca.
He also wants to see how well Barcelona, with its integral success, is doing in La Liga and the Champions League.
But in Messi’s decision, the main element would be the replacement of Josep Maria Bartomeu in the presidential office.
With the former club president, the Barcelona talisman did not get on well and that was one of the key reasons why he decided to leave.
Now, after his departure, with Bartomeu out, Barca is expected to name a new president at the end of the year.
Yet Messi needs to have a big say in what’s going to happen and wants someone with a good idea for how to get the club back on top.
He wants to know what their transfer strategy will be, what’s going to happen to the position of the sporting director and the coaches’ plans, Marca reports.
Whatever happens, Messi will not sign a new contract until the end of the season, when there is time for the whole situation to bed in.
That is going to leave Barcelona in a nervous place with his contract scheduled to expire at the end of June.
But before what will definitely be the last big contract he signs, Messi needs to have the whole picture in front of him.
