According to reports, hundreds of civilians fled their homes in Marte, a community in Borno State, after alleged insurgents from Boko Haram attacked a military base and raided public buildings on the fringes of the Lake Chad Basin.

It was learned that on Friday evening, terrorists in their hundreds raided the newly resettled community in the northern part of the state, firing from every angle and forcing returnees to flee into the bushes.

An official from the Borno State Government told our correspondent that on Friday evening, there was a gun battle between soldiers and insurgents in Marte City for hours.

He added that hundreds of civilians slept and trekked all throughout night in the bushes, but Dikwa town, which is about 25 kilometers away, began arriving.

“The news was upsetting. Last night, about 8:00 p.m., we got the sad news that the troops had been fighting the insurgents for hours.

Hundreds of returnees have left their homes and are taking shelter in Dikwa as I speak to you.

The troops showed gallantry, but according to the information we got, the insurgents came in hundreds.

The source disclosed, “Our prayers are with the troops.”

A security source also reported that military formations have been targeted by insurgents.

The source further emphasized that there was a reinforcement from Dikwa this morning that involved the outlawed party, but as of the time of completion of this article, the details are not available.

However, unconfirmed reports suggested that last night, insurgents might have overrun Marte.

It should be noted that 500 households were resettled by the State on 1 December 2020, comprising 2,870 returnees after six years in exile.
