Atletico Madrid, as Diego Simeone’s side went down 1-0 to Cornella, have been the victims of a Copa del Rey giant-killing for a second consecutive season.

In the round of 32 last season, LaLiga leaders Atleti lost 2-1 to Cultural Leonesa, and slumped out to the Segunda B opposition on Wednesday.

The 10-time Copa champions dropped seven minutes into the second-round tie in Catalonia behind Adrian Jimenez’s sensational flick.

Saul Niguez hit the woodwork and Lucas Torreira went close with a free-kick, but Atleti’s problems were compounded by Ricard Sanchez’s second booking as Minnows Cornella celebrated a famous triumph.

In the opening moments, before Jose Gimenez, making his 200th Atleti appearance, scythed down Raul Prieto, Sanchez was lucky not to concede a penalty for handball.

Cornella added insult to injury with Gimenez, who was booked for his troubles, off the pitch undergoing treatment, with Agus Medina’s cross flicked home expertly by Jimenez.

Shortly after the 20-minute mark, Atleti seemed poised to restore parity, but Angel Correa saw two attempts stopped either side of Saul striking the crossbar.

While Atleti saw over 60 percent of possession, if not for Miguel San Roman’s save from Pablo Fernandez, they would have been 2-0 down going into the break.

Early in the second half, Vitolo got in behind Cornella’s backline only for an errant offside flag to deny him the opportunity to equalise.

The curling free-kick of Torreira was inches away from leveling proceedings, but Atleti was then lucky that at the other end Eloy Gila flicked over from close range.

When he was considered to have kicked out at Cornella goalkeeper Ramon Juan, Sanchez’s frustrating night was made worse-the full-back seeing red just 11 minutes after earning his first booking as the comeback attempts of Atleti proved futile.
