Court jails ABU staff and her daughter for faking kidnap

For faking a kidnap, Ebong Joy Akpan, a staff member at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, and her daughter were sentenced to six months and seven years in prison, respectively.

The ABU staff who conspired with her daughter to stage her kidnapping had allegedly turned around to blame her opponents in the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), ABU Chapter, for the crime.

Muhammad Gimba Alfa, Mohammed Inusa, Lawal Yakubu Hunkuyi, Haruna Mohammed, Salisu Isa, and Rev. J. F Bukkah, all ABU employees, were accused of being behind the act.

Following her arraignment, Chief Magistrate Abdullahi G. Maigamo Esq of the Chief Magistrate Court in Fada, Zaria city found Akpan and her daughter, Inyene Akpan, a final year student at the school, guilty of criminal conspiracy, giving false information with the intent to deceive public servant, and fabricating false facts.

Under sections 97(2) and 140, as well as 158(2) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 1991, they were sentenced to six months in prison with the option of an N25,000 fine and seven years in prison with the option of an N75,000 fine.
