A dad caught accessing child abuse pictures said that after his wife unexpectedly died of cancer, and he has since “descended” into paedophilia.
Just six weeks after being hospitalized with a rare and violent form of the disease, Laura Pemberton, 29, from Huyton, died.
The day before she passed away in June 2010, she married her husband and the father of her three children, Gareth Sumner.
Two years later, the young family’s home was raided by burglars who stole computers and game consoles, notes the Liverpool Echo.
But the 39-year-old dad appeared at Liverpool Crown Court, admitting that he was downloading indecent photos of kids high on alcohol and drugs.
Charles Lander, a lawyer, told the court that on December 13, 2017, police raided the family’s home in First Avenue, Fazakerley.
Before handing over a cell phone, Sumner denied being responsible for any illicit internet use, and it was’ instantly evident’ that the computer contained pornographic photographs of young girls.
He was arrested, but when interviewed, Sumner suggested his Facebook account had been compromised and someone else was liable.
A second phone was retrieved from his phone, and 64 indecent photos were discovered after research was performed on the two computers.
Nine Category A records have been identified, including one video of a child being raped. There were an additional 11 images from Category B and 44 from Category C, along with one extreme porn picture.
Between February 2015 and December 2017, the court heard that the images were downloaded.
Three download counts and one of having obscene pictures, plus one count of having extreme porn before a trial last year, were admitted by Sumner.
Defending, Andrew Costello said that while the father reiterated the argument that he had been hacked, he now admitted and stood by his pleas of guilt.
