After being released by Egyptian Premier League club El-Gouna in October 2020, former Egypt and Al Ahly striker Mohamed Nagy Gedo has announced his retirement from football.

For his super-substitute role in Egypt’s triumphant effort at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, Gedo was most notable.

The former Hull City striker came off the bench on six occasions during the continental showpiece and scored five goals that made him the top scorer of the tournament as the Pharaohs lifted their seventh title in Afcon.

After coming on as a substitute in their opening game, he sealed Egypt’s 3-1 victory over Nigeria and scored the tournament goal that secured a 1-0 triumph over Ghana in the final match after he was added as a 70th-minute substitute.

“This is the best time to retire, I feel. Gedo tweeted, “Thank God I had a wonderful career that was much bigger than I could have imagined.”

“For every moment, I am so thankful. I am grateful to have fulfilled all my goals, but without your help, this would not have happened. I’m excited for the new path of my life right now. Thanks to all of you.

Before moving to Al-Ittihad in 2005, where he spent five years, Gedo began his career at Ala’ab Damanhour in 2002.

The 36-year-old was signed by Egyptian Premier League giants Al Ahly following his impressive results at Afcon 2010, where, among others, he won two Caf Champions League titles, two league titles and two Caf Super Cups.

Gedo was loaned to Hull City for his first European adventure during his tenure in Cairo and he helped the Tigers win promotion to the Premier League in the 2012-13 campaign. Later, the star born in Damanhur made two appearances in the English top-flight.
