#EndSARS: IGP warns police officers against harming protesters

On Tuesday, police officers in Ebonyi State were tasked by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, to enforce the law of their engagement to stop all violent protests in the state but to kill.

As part of his tour to states following the End SARs protest, IGP Adamu made this known while addressing officers during his one-day visit to Ebonyi.

He noted that any sort of violent protest in the country would never be tolerated by the force, expressing frustration with the high level of destruction of lives and property caused by the nation’s End SARs protest.

However, he condemned the harm caused by the protest of the End SARs, just as he commended the workers for their efforts during the time to save the country from chaos and calamity.

In addition, Adamu tasked Nigerians to always preserve peace and order, and affirmed the commitment of the military to work hard to protect citizens’ lives and property.

If you want to take part in some demonstration, it must be nonviolent and the police will give you all the protection you need to carry out the protest, but if it’s going to be abuse, we’ll stop you.

The rule of involvement of the police is still in use and we will continue to apply it to violent checkmate protests, especially riots.

To the police, while you are on the ground during any demonstration, attempt to enter the situation, if the protest is abuse, to enforce the rule of engagement, to make use of the maximum force required for that situation.

You, as police officers, are specially trained to protect and not kill lives. Always know when to use your gun, but you’re not supposed to shoot,’ he advised.

Earlier in his remarks, the Ebonyi State Command Commissioner of Police, Mr. Philip Maku,
Concerns about the damage caused by the protest of End SARs were expressed.

Maku noted that during the EndSARs demonstration in the province, a total of five police officers lost their lives.

In addition, in Ebonyi, 11 police structures have been demolished. A total of 20 cars, of which five were police vehicles, were vandalized and charred, he said.
