As Everton claimed a 2-1 victory to sustain the pressure on Mikel Arteta, Arsenal struggled to stop their dismal Premier League form.

The Gunners, without Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang injured, have now gone seven league games without a win after the header of Yerry Mina and the own goal of Rob Holding lifted Everton to second place.

At Goodison Park, where Arteta spent six and a half seasons as a player, Nicolas Pepe’s penalty had restored parity, but it was not a platform on which Arsenal could develop.

Although the mistake of Jordan Pickford led to David Luiz hitting the post, Mina’s 45th-minute header eventually proved sufficient for Everton to claim a third straight win from a game that saw just four-goal attempts.

As Everton began in assured fashion, Michael Keane was only inches away from breaking the deadlock, and when Dominic Calvert-header Lewin’s from Alex Iwobi’s cross redirected in off Keeping, an opener came.

Eddie Nketiah sliced wide from the cutback of Kieran Tierney to waste the first opportunity for Arsenal, but the blind challenge of Tom Davies on Ainsley Maitland-Niles handed a reprieve to the Gunners.

Pepe made no error, sending Pickford with a cool finish the wrong way, the sixth consecutive good penalty for the Ivorian.

Bernd Leno thought that with a stunning save from Calvert-Lewin, he had held the scores equal going into the break, but Everton regained their advantage when Mina headed in from the subsequent corner of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Arsenal came out soon after the restart amid the loss, with David Luiz striking the upright after Pickford flapped at a cross.

The strong run by Ben Godfrey almost resulted in Calvert-Lewin snatching a third on the counter for Everton, before Richarlison went close to teeing up Iwobi.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, Arteta turned to Gabriel Martinelli, while the best chance for the visitors did not come until the dying seconds when Pickford held out the low drive of Bukayo Saka to condemn Arsenal to the season’s eighth league loss.
