Ex-Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, demoted after complaining about soldiers fighting against Boko Haram not having weapons

Former Operation Lafiya Dole theater commander Olusegun Adeniyi, who was seen in a viral video months ago moaning about soldiers battling Boko Haram not getting enough weapons, has been degraded for at least three years.

After being dismissed as commander of Operation Lafiya Dole and transferred to the Nigerian Army Resource Center in Abuja, Adeniyi was subjected to a court-martial.

He was transferred to the headquarters of the army later, still in Abuja.

While the military argued that the redeployment of Adeniyi was a routine exercise meant to reinvigorate the regime, the military tribunal he appeared before found him guilty of breaking the laws of military social media and sentenced him on Monday 30 November to be weakened for at least three years.

Tokunbo Obanla, the military assistant to Adeniyi who was believed to be in possession of his phone at the time of the incident, was also found guilty and sentenced to 28 days in prison with hard labor after supposedly admitting in error to uploading the video on social media.

Although both sentences are subject to military board approval until they can take effect, Adeniyi’s lawyers said they would appeal the decision of the tribunal to higher military authorities.
