Ex-Imo State Governor, Ohakim granted N10m bail after being arraigned over ‘false information’

After being arraigned before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court on Wednesday November 11 on a three-count charge bordering on criminal defamation, Ikedi Ohakim, former Governor of Imo State, was granted N10 m bail.

The case brought by the police inspector-general against the former governor based on land that he allegedly wanted to sell to one Chinyere Amuchienwa.

The charges read;

“In May 2019, Ohakim gave false information against one Chinyere Amuchienwa that she threatened you with gun knowing it to be false and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 140 of the Penal Code Laws of Northern Nigeria.

“That you Ikedi Ohakim, on or about the 23rd day of May 2019, at Asokoro, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court did unlawfully gave false information against one Chinyere Amuchienwa, that you have a plot of land for sale at Lagos state, knowing it to be false…”

Ohakim was also accused of illegally using the name of the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, as the owner of the suspected land in the state of Ikeja, Lagos, counting three of the charges against him.

Justice Samira Bature, who ruled on the case after the former governor pleaded not guilty, granted him a bail of N10 million and an equal amount of one protection.

The Judge claimed that the guarantee must be a respectable member of the organization and must live within the jurisdiction of the court (Abuja). She also cautioned the defendant against inferencing the case with the prosecution, which she said might lead to the bail being withdrawn.

Subsequently, the case was adjourned until 25 January 2021 for the start of the trial.
