Former NBA All-Star, “Fast” Eddie Johnson, who was hit with a lifetime ban on drug use by the NBA and was later sent to jail for a child’s sexual assault, died while serving a life sentence.
On October 26th, the 65-year-old passed away. On Tuesday , November 3rd, his death was confirmed by the Rocker-Cusack Mortuary in Leesburg, Florida.
In the 1977 NBA draft, Johnson, who was a third-round selection from Auburn by the Hawks, became an immediate contributor and then a starter for the Hawks.
For his explosive first move, Johnson received the nickname “Fast Eddie,” and averaged 15.1 points in 10 NBA seasons. He started out at the All-Star Games of 1980 and 1981.
He received a lifetime ban for his drug use from the NBA in 1987.
After he was found guilty of sexual assault on an 8-year-old girl, Johnson was 53 when he received a mandatory life sentence in 2008.
At the Santa Rosa Correctional Facility in Milton, Florida, the former NBA star was serving a life sentence when an unidentified illness led to his death.
Johnson will be buried on Saturday at Weirsdale (Florida) Community Cemetery, the mortuary said.
