The deadline for connecting the national identification numbers to the SIM registration database was extended by the Federal Government, the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) said on Wednesday.
In a statement, ALTON confirmed that it had received formal confirmation from the Nigerian Communications Commission that President Muhammadu Buhari had authorized the extension of the deadline from 19 January to 9 February 2021 for NIN subscribers to connect it to their SIM registration details.
We would like to thank the President for giving us more time to deliver on this all-important task of developing the country’s reliable national identity database.
We are also grateful to Dr. Isa Ibrahim Ali Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, for his contribution to enabling the digital economy,” the association said in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, and Damian Udeh, Secretary of Advertising.
It added: “We urge all telecom subscribers who have a NIN to link it to their SIM cards through available channels as soon as possible to ensure that we use the extension period judiciously.” Those who have yet to register are encouraged to visit www.nimc.gov.ng for a list of nearby enrollment centres.”
