ASUU Strike: FG Commences The Registration Of New Union

fg 1

The federal government has started the process of registering a rival union as part of the current 10-month-old strike by the Academic Workers Union of Universities (ASUU).

This was announced by Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Jobs, when the leadership of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), headed by its National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, paid a courtesy visit to him on Thursday 19 November.

The Minister regretted ASUU’s long strike, which he said had adversely affected the country’s educational growth.

Ngige said;

Today in this ministry, we formally receive you in the audience. We have the right to obtain employee associations with people, whether or not we have registered them, just as you have the right to apply for registration, which is the legal thing to do.

We have the right to hold meetings with you and receive them. The road has just begun to get you enrolled.

By applying, you did the right thing and this ministry also did the right thing by processing your registration.

Review of your registration application is ongoing. To look into that review, I have set up a committee. I’m going to ask the committee to end its work.

Four weeks from today, we are giving them to turn their report to the ministry.

“Part of our job here is to register unions; it is also part of our job to make sure that unions that are not functional are helped.”

Ngige also commended the lecturers at the university for starting the union registration process.
