The Federal Government has said that the proposed resumption date for schools on January 18th is not sacrosanct and a new date will soon be revealed.

At the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, said this on Monday in Abuja.

The ministry will meet on Tuesday to review the situation in the midst of increasing cases of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, he said.

In December 2020, the PTF ordered the country’s schools to remain closed until 18 January 2021.

Adamu said: “It is not sacrosanct (January 18th school reopening date).” It was merely a target for what we were working on when we agreed on that date. We keep it in mind, of course, and look at what is going on in society, and so it is meant to be subject to continuous scrutiny.

We were looking at the rising figures even today at the PTF meeting and thinking about whether we should actually take another look at it.

On the resumption of January 18th, we are updating it, we are going to review it. We considered it today at the PTF meeting and the Ministry is going to take it up tomorrow,’ Adamu said.
