A shocking video of the world’s largest coronavirus vaccine factory has shown a massive fire erupting.

As concerned onlookers watch in terror, smoke can be seen filling the sky.

Smoke billows from windows in the higher levels of the building in another video.

The blaze erupted earlier today (January 21) at the Serum Institute of India (SII) in the western city of Pune and five individuals are now believed to have been killed.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear, but in an under-construction building that did not contain the vaccine, it is believed to have broken out.

Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said: “Maybe the five people who died were employees at the building under construction.”

“The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but it is speculated that the fire was caused by welding, which occurred in the building.”

Initial reports reported there were no casualties, but the CEO of SII, Adar Poonawalla, also stated that “some loss of life” had occurred.

He said: “We learned after further investigation that the incident, unfortunately, caused some loss of life.”

“We are deeply saddened and offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed.”

For India and other low- and middle-income nations, SII is developing the Covishield vaccine, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

India has become one of the world’s worst-hit coronavirus countries.

They have had 10.6 million positive cases to date and nearly 153,000 deaths.

In the UK, Storm Christoph’s continuing disruption has seen a Covid vaccine facility experience some minor flooding.

To protect the warehouse, fire crews have been pumping water from the area.
