In the wake of news that Oliver Khan might leave Bayern Munich this summer, Hansi Flick has confirmed he spoke with him, with Stefan Effenberg warning that his departure would be “fatal” for the Bavarian giants.

Following news of a squabble with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, Flick’s status has been called into question.

The looming vacancy with the German national team, with Flick rumored to be in line to replace Joachim Low when he steps down after the European Championship, has added to the confusion.

Flick hinted that rumors of a split between himself and Salihamidzic are real, but emphasized that he does not believe this should be a roadblock to success.

“I prefer peace to conflict.” But nothing is ever 100 percent, so you have to consider both,” he said to reporters. “However, I assume that with peace, the chances [of success] are better.”

He added: “I talked to Oliver Kahn briefly, but about other things.” Kahn is a member of Bayern’s board of directors and will succeed Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as executive board chairman at the end of the year.

“It’s not as if I or we are under any duress. We had a short conversation. This week was discussed, as well as the importance of this week.

“We also discussed how we dealt with the Champions League exit; that was all we talked about – nothing else, nothing about the future.”

Despite appearing to be calm about the future, Flick admits he is still angry about Bayern’s Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, which saw the French side advance on away goals despite Bayern’s 1-0 win in France earlier this week.

In response to reports about Flick’s future, Effenberg issued a dire warning to Bayern officials if the manager is not retained.

“It would be fatal for the next few years if Hansi Flick voluntarily resigns from his contract in the summer,” he told the Sport1 Podcast, “because he is one of the best Bayern coaches in history.”

The strain on Flick has risen as a result of Bayern’s early exit from the Champions League, and his evasive response to rumors linking him with the Germany job did little to dispel speculation that he is ready to leave at the end of the season.
