As they had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at Fulham, Liverpool missed the opportunity to go to the top of the Premier League.

In the first half, when Bobby Decordova-Reid struck home in emphatic fashion after finding space in the area, the hosts took a deserved lead.

The visiting side of Jurgen Klopp started to concede chances from there but, after getting in at half-time just one down, through the penalty of Mohamed Salah, they found a way back into the game in the second period.

However as Fulham held on for a point that extends their recent revival, there was no late siege on the hosts’ goal.

Having gained a reputation so far this season for sluggish starts, Fulham chose the champions’ visit to test out a new tactic of jumping out of the traps.

And with Ivan Cavaleiro drawing two strong saves in quick succession from Alisson after slipping in behind during the early stages, it certainly seemed to work.

A challenge on the same Fulham attacker in the box was investigated by VAR at length shortly after, but the flow of the hosts definitely did not suffer, despite no spot-kick being awarded.

As such, it was no disappointment to see them take the lead through Decordova-Reid who before lashing the ball into the far corner, latched onto a clever Ademola Lookman pass just inside the box.

The visitors could have done without enduring yet another injury blow at half-time after putting together one of their worst halves of the season as Joel Matip forced him off with a sore back.

Even with Andy Robertson almost diverting a clearance off a Fulham player moments after the restart, the transfer of Jordan Henderson into the backline did nothing for their organization.

With Henderson drawing a smart save from Alphonse Areola at the close range soon after, they at least improved from there but Liverpool failed to convert possession into chances of note regularly.

Consequently, getting Liverpool back into the game was always going to take some good fortune, and they got just that when Aboubakar Kamara in the defensive wall handled Georginio Wijnaldum’s seemingly harmless free-kick.

Salah did the rest from 12 yards, though Areola was only narrowly evaded by a poor spot-kick, setting up an exciting end to the game.

From that point on, Scott Parker’s men saw less of the ball, but they proceeded to look defensively determined as they took a share of the spoils that their success certainly merited.
