The first Merseyside derby of the season at Goodison Park ended with both sides sharing the spoils, after early league leaders Everton came from behind on two occasions to earn a 2-2 draw.

However, like many matches in England’s top flight these days, it was marred by a dramatic and pivotal moment of VAR controversy.

Jordan Henderson thought he had netted a last-gasp winner for the visitors deep into stoppage time, but after a long period of deliberation between officials the strike was ruled out as Sadio Mane was adjudged to have been narrowly offside during the build-up.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has long been a critic of the VAR system, and the 53-year-old returned to form once again following the final whistle.

He told BT Sport of his frustrations concerning the crucial offside decision, as well as launching digs at members of the Everton side due to some heavy tackling during the match.

Full transcript of the match below;

Q: Was that everything you wanted to see apart from the winner at the end?

“The performance was top.

“I think you could see that was a top game, a good game from both teams.

“We were playing dominant against a side that is full of confidence, has a clear plan.

“We played a really, really good game, probably the best away game since I was at Liverpool we played at Goodison.

“In the end it’s still 2-2 for different reasons.”

Q: In terms of a response, did you see what you were looking for?

“I saw a really good performance and you will think I’m only happy when we win.

“I could be more happy if we win but the performance was the response, at least.

“I didn’t actually want to see a response, I wanted to see we stayed the team we were before even after a proper knock.”

Q: One key moment – Klopp interrupted: “No, more key moments.

“With the injury of Virgil van Dijk, that’s pretty early in the game.

“I didn’t see it back but it took a while so obviously it was not too big, the offside.

“Then Pickford kicks him completely.”

Q: How does he not get a red card for that?

“I didn’t see it back, so you maybe can say more about this.

“The only decision I saw back was now, only briefly in the dressing room, the Henderson goal and the pass for Sadio, and I didn’t see offside, sorry.

“Maybe somebody can explain it to me because the picture I saw was not offside.

“But it was offside because somebody decided it was.”

Q: And in terms of moving ahead, now…

“Difficult, difficult at the moment because the red card for Richarlison, it’s not only a red card for Everton it’s a massive foul on Thiago as well.

“Thiago has a proper knock there, he has ice now, we don’t know what he has, it looks not good, to be honest.

“The game was brilliant but it’s over, we have one point, we should have had three, maybe. We cannot change that any more, that’s the situation, I cannot change it.

“The game was good, I cannot say more about that. I loved it in so many moments, how we played against a good, organised side.”
