Gareth Bale was reportedly the only Real Madrid player who refused to accept a pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Plenty of clubs around the world had to take action as football was stopped for three months earlier in 2020.

Real Madrid are believed to have asked their stars to take a 10 per cent reduction with Sergio Ramos and Zinedine Zidane playing key roles in negotiations.

Though Spanish outlet Cadena SER claim that Bale was the only Los Blancos player who refused to accept the cut.

It’s reported that Bale was advised by his representatives and said that he was not willing to give up part of his pay.

Real skipper Ramos was reportedly in charge of liaising between the squad and the club while Zidane is believed to have made the players see the need to help the La Liga giants.

It’s added that the squad accepted without hesitation, apart from Bale who has now returned to Tottenham for the season.

Bale starts on the bench against West Ham having not featured before the international break due to injury.

Upon heading back to the Premier League, the former Southampton star said: “It feels great to be back in an environment where I’m loved.

“I’ve said in previous interviews that when I go back to Wales I feel that love and happiness and that’s when I’m able to play my best football.

“Coming back here I knew I was going to get a great reception. I love the club and I loved my time here.

“Hopefully now we can kick on and win a trophy – if not two! I just want to enjoy my football and give the fans something to smile about.

“I spoke to my wife and we felt like it was the right fit and the right time.

“I feel like when I’m happy I play my best football and I feel like coming back here to Spurs I’m very happy. I already feel the love at the ground meeting the staff and the players.

“When I’m in that mind-set I have no worries and it’s easy to let my natural ability take over.”
