GitHub to now operate in Iran, after obtaining a sanction exemption

Github

After putting limitations on the site for Iranian developers due to US sanctions, GitHub says it is now going to offer its full range of services in Iran.

The changes are due to an exception provided by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the US Treasury Department’s sanction enforcement arm.

We’re announcing a milestone today: we’ve obtained a US government license to sell GitHub to developers in Iran.

This includes all programs, private and public, free and charged, for individuals and organizations, GitHub CEO Nat Friedman wrote in a blog post published Tuesday.

“We have been able to demonstrate over the course of two years how the use of GitHub by developers promotes human progress, international communication, and the enduring US foreign policy of promoting freedom of speech and the free flow of information.”

Since 2019, GitHub has been operating in Iran in a very limited way, mainly by making some public code repositories accessible, due to US trade restrictions that forced the open-source hosting site owned by Microsoft to similarly limit its operations in Crimea and Syria.

The corporation is now “in the process of rolling back all developer restrictions in Iran” and “re-establishing full access to affected accounts,” and Friedman says GitHub is also trying to secure exemptions for Crimea and Syria.
