Google Photos to introduce a 3D effect to 2D images soon

google

The company revealed in a blog post on Tuesday that Google Photos would soon be able to take your 2D images and make them look as if they’re 3D.

Google calls these types of images “Cinematic photos,” and as part of its Memories feature, they’re a new form of an image that the app will display.

Here is a Google GIF that compares a 2D image to a cinematic photograph. I think it looks pretty amazing with this feature:

“We use machine learning to predict the depth of an image and generate a 3D representation of the scene to make cinematic photos, even if the original image does not include camera depth information,” writes Jamie Aspinall, a Google Photos product manager, on Tuesday’s blog.

“Then just like in the movies, we animate a virtual camera for a smooth panning effect.”

Google says Google Photos will generate Cinematic Photos automatically, and they will appear above your photo grid in the recent highlights section.

New themes are also being added by the organization for Memories. Now you can see memories of important people in your life, and soon, Google Photos will show you memories of your favorite things (Google gave the sunset example) and activities (such as baking or hiking).
