Google purchases Neverware, a startup which transforms old computers into Chromebooks

Neverware today revealed in a FAQ that it’s part of Google now.

Neverware, based in New York City, makes a software application called CloudReady that allows you to turn a PC into a Chrome OS operating system.

Neverware states in its FAQ that it is “officially part of Google and the Chrome OS team” and its CloudReady software.

For personal usage, CloudReady provides a free version, as well as paid levels for business and education. The idea is that rather than tossing them out, businesses and schools (as well as people) should turn old, sluggish systems into Chromebooks. Chrome OS is a less demanding operating system for these computers to run than Windows 10 is.

Not much is going to improve for existing CloudReady users in the near future, according to Neverware’s FAQ.

The website, forums, customer care, and admin portal of the company will continue to operate as normal, but it seems like they will eventually move to the services of Google.

Any of the apps that Neverware makes could help Google continue to push Chrome OS updates to older devices, as the About Chromebooks site states, expanding the time span in which the new software can be received by some Chromebooks. (Google didn’t say anything of that kind, but for now, that’s all optimistic speculation).

Google and Neverware are well familiar; back in 2017, Google led an investment round in the startup.
