Governor Ganduje asks East carolina university to apologize for his illegal appointment

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State asked the management of an American university, East Carolina University (ECU), to apologize for a controversial ‘appointment’ he was granted.

This came days after the spokesperson for Ganduje, Abba Anwar, announced that he had been appointed to the institution as a visiting professor of e-governance and international affairs. Anwar said news of the appointment was transmitted in a letter sent to the school on November 30 by Victor Mbarika, a lecturer at the International Center for IT and Development.

Nevertheless, in a letter to Ganduje dated December 4, 2020, the university’s Interim Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr Grant Hayes, debunked the news of the appointment.

The letter entitled ‘Re: Faculty Appointment Unavailability’ reads;

It has been brought to my attention that you received a letter from a faculty member dated November 30, 2020, which appeared to offer an unpaid position at East Carolina University College of Business at the “International Center for IT and Growth.

I must inform you that the letter you received from Dr. Victor Mbarika on 30 November 2020 does not convey an approved offer of appointment to the University of East Carolina (‘ECU’) or provide for any position as a scholar or professor. Only the Chancellor, myself or another official referred to in the published ECU Declaration on the Delegation of the Contracting Authority for the Academic Affairs Division can approve or sign letters of appointment under which the faculty is employed.

In a statement released on Sunday, December 6 by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, the Kano state government responded to this by asking the university to approve Victor Mbarika. They are saddened by the controversy stirred up by the controversial appointment that tried to shame Mr. Ganduje, the state government added.

Usman, who argued that Ganduje did not apply for appointments at any university or higher education institution within and outside Nigeria, added that the Governor was surprised by the content of the letter from the University’s Office of the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
