The Egyptian has equaled the goalscoring record of the Reds legend, but the Rangers boss predicts that the African can far exceed that level.

Steven Gerrard says his Liverpool Champions League goalscoring record would go-ahead to ’embarrass’ Mohamed Salah.

As Jurgen Klopp’s team silenced Atalanta 5-0 at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Tuesday night, the Egypt international got a goal and an assist.

The former AS Roma star’s 21st in the Anfield giants’ tournament was his effort, a cool left-footed finish at the end of a fast sprint forward. And that moved him to level terms with Gerrard as the top goalscorer for the Reds in the history of the European Cup and Champions League.

The Rangers boss thinks the 28-year-old will go all the way in the record books and is pleased to see the two-time African Player of the Year equal his feat.

Gerrard told the Scottishsun, “Records are there to be broken, of course, they are.”

Last night, I was very proud to see Mo Salah tie my Liverpool scoring record in Europe, and it was only a matter of time.

I genuinely think he’s going to go on to make my record humiliating, and I hope he does.

“For strikers, that kind of thing is still there. Mo Salah and Alfredo are always hungry for goals because of their company.

My work was slightly different in Liverpool. Nothing could be better than watching someone go for a record and then smash it to bits.

Salah had shared his joy, equivalent to the record of the club.

“I ‘m glad to have equalled Gerrard ‘s record [with 21 Champions League goals], he’s a legend in Liverpool,” Salah said on Sky Sports.

It’s a privilege for me, but, most importantly, my role is to score to help the team and win games.

Immediately unlocking the game gave us confidence and the prospect of having more chances. The Atalanta game helped us, but it helped them as well.

Last year, they proved that they are a team that scores a lot and concedes a lot, too. They’re a powerful bunch, that is for sure. This year, they’ll do well again.’

The Egyptian has been an instant success for Klopp ‘s men since joining the Reds for £36.7 million ($45 m) in the summer of 2017 from Serie A outfit AS Roma, helping them win the Champions League, Premier League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.
