After Joe Gomez was penalized during Sunday’s clash at Etihad Stadium, the Reds skipper challenged the handball rule.

During Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson criticized the “harsh” penalty given against his side.

When Reds defender Joe Gomez was penalized for handball when he tried to block Kevin De Bruyne’s right-wing cross, City was awarded a spot-kick.

Initially, the penalty was not issued by referee Craig Pawson, but the official chose to point to the spot after the video assistant referee told him to watch a replay of the incident.

During Leicester’s game against Wolves earlier on Sunday, a similar incident took place, with Wanderers defender Max Kilman penalized on that occasion for handball.

Henderson accepts that the two cases mean that the officials are at least consistent with their judgments, but feels that the laws on defenders are unjust.

People are going to say I’m biased because it’s against us, but in the Leicester game I saw a similar one. Joe is running back to his own goal, where is he going to place his arms? “he said to Sky Sports,” I think it’s so hard for defenders.

“I thought it was unfair, but they were fairly consistent. They gave it in the Leicester game and they gave it today, but I think it’s harsh for us as players.”

When asked if the handball rule, which was tweaked at the beginning of the season, is straightforward, Henderson told BBC Sport: “I don’t think so, the game before [Leicester vs Wolves] was compliant with it to be fair to the referees. They’re going to the law letter. They’re going to the law letter.”

It’s difficult for players, I feel it’s hard for defenders to run back at the speed of Kevin De Bruyne ‘s cross, it’s hard for him to get out of the way.

“Everyone has a hard time knowing where to put their weapons. Hopefully, the refs will look at it and in both games it shouldn’t be provided.

As De Bruyne sent his penalty wide of the post, the incident did not prove costly to Liverpool.

After Gabriel Jesus had canceled out Mohamed’s Salah early opener for Liverpool, the game was tied at 1-1 at that point, with neither side able to find a winner after the break.

Henderson was pleased with the success of the Reds, but admits that he is not fully satisfied with a point.

“We knew it would be hard to come here, City is great and it was an intense game, we have to take the point overall and move on,” he added.

It’s such a hard place to go, I would have preferred a champion.

A lot of the time we do, but particularly today, we started very well. In the game, the work rate and intensity were very strong, defensively solid and so many positive positives in the game.

We’ve limited the problems they create and hopefully, we’re back for another series of intense fixtures after the international break.

We changed a little bit tactically, but not the strength, which did not improve. Not only defensively but offensively, the front four were brilliant, they all worked very hard.

“That is why we were so solid defensively. We were waiting for the moment to win the ball back and find the winner, but we didn’t get the opportunity to do so, unfortunately.
