According to Goal, former Liverpool and Lyon boss Gerard Houllier died at the age of 73.

RMC Sport announced that in the early hours of Monday morning, the Frenchman, who also worked with Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain in his coaching career at club level, passed away.

For the six years that he spent at Anfield between 1998 and 2004, Houllier will be better remembered.

He was initially named as joint-manager alongside Roy Evans by the Reds but soon took the reins on Merseyside by himself.

Under Houllier’s stewardship, League title glory proved elusive for Liverpool, but he did deliver six pieces of silverware.

In a memorable 2001, five of those honors were won, with the Reds enjoying a remarkable run on the trophy front.

That year, Houllier oversaw triumphs in the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, Community Shield, and UEFA Super Cup, while continuing to win the League Cup again in 2002-03.

After seeing him spend several years employed inside the national team set-up in France, Liverpool had made their move for a highly-rated tactician.

Houllier oversaw a dramatic qualifying campaign that saw a star-studded French side struggle to qualify for the 1994 World Cup after initially serving as assistant to Michel Platini with Les Bleus.

On the basis of that frustration, he quit and went back to working with youth teams.

Liverpool finally came calling, once again luring him into a senior dugout, and Houllier’s final coaching role at Aston Villa would also be filled in England.

Two years were spent back in his homeland in Lyon before joining the Villans in September 2010, which he guided to back-to-back victories in the Ligue 1 championship.

His tally of French league titles brought those achievements to three, with his account opening with Paris Saint-Germain in 1985-86.

The win was the first in the history of PSG and helped drive Houllier, who in his playing days had never been a professional, into contention for top jobs around the world.

In 2002, along with an honorary OBE for his efforts in England, he was awarded the Legion d’honneur for his contributions to French football.

The European Coach of the Year Prize was also presented to Houllier in 2001 and will be held in the highest esteem by all those who have served under and alongside him during a distinguished career.
