How Man Utd could line up vs PSG as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces dilemma after Newcastle win

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to make some tough selection calls when his side face Paris Saint-Germain in their opening Champions League fixture on Tuesday.

The Red Devils bounced back from their 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday and a number of fringe players started the game.

Juan Mata played on the right wing with Mason Greenwood unfit to travel, while Anthony Martial’s suspension and Edinson Cavani’s quarantine period meant Daniel James was given an opportunity on the left with Marcus Rashford playing central.

Mata in particular impressed against Steve Bruce’s side and could be in line to keep his place against PSG.

David de Gea will likely start in goal after a good display, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire look set to keep their places after finding the back of the net.

Victor Lindelof is expected to partner Maguire, while deadline day signing Alex Telles could make his first start for the club after completing a deadline day move from Porto.

Donny van de Beek should start after an impactful cameo from the bench, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in contention to partner the Dutchman.

In attack, Solskjaer’s options are plentiful, with Bruno Fernandes, Rashford, Martial, Cavani, Mata, James and Odion Ighalo among his options.

Asked whether Mata needs to start more regularly after his performance against Newcastle, Solskjaer said: “Of course, I get questions about our players when they play and why they don’t play.

“We have many good players and it’s about taking your chances when you do get them. Juan has definitely done so. Juan is playing fantastic. He is so professional and everyone in the team knows his qualities. He has been so patient, waiting for the chance.

“Dan’s strength, you know, is his incredible speed. Today, I thought he showed productivity and trusted himself. We work with all the players and tell them to express themselves and show what they’ve got. Juan and Bruno [Fernandes] were in the pockets and Dan and Marcus were working hard to run in behind them and be positive.

“All of them did fantastic but I’m very pleased for Dan. He’s been away with Wales and missed a few games for us with a bad cold. Today, it was a very good performance by Dan.”
